PDS Named Apple Distinguished School

Presbyterian Day School (PDS) is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2014–2016.

Headmaster Steve Hancock will announce the honor at a special school assembly on Friday, January 21, 2015. Apple representative Jennifer Saunier will be on hand to make the official presentation.

PDS was selected because of its approach to teaching and assessing for deep understanding and its commitment to integrating educational technology using Apple hardware, apps, and content-creation apps — all of which began in 2001 with the inception of the school’s one-to-one laptop program.

PDS is among a select group of schools in the world recognized by Apple in the Apple Distinguished School program.

Apple Distinguished Schools are K–20 schools that provide 24/7, schoolwide, one-to-one access to Apple notebook computers and/or mobile devices to all students, teachers, and administrators. They demonstrate an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment.

“PDS has used technology in innovative and creative ways for over a decade. We put a strong emphasis on creating classrooms where our teachers and students can seamlessly integrate computers, iPads, and applications into the daily lessons. Student engagement and academic achievement have increased as a result of this technology integration,” said Headmaster Steve Hancock.

In 2001, Presbyterian Day School was among the first elementary schools in the nation to begin a one-to-one laptop program. Today, every boy in Junior Kindergarten through 6th grade has a laptop.

Fluency in technology has been instrumental in the ongoing development of the school’s curriculum, which is customized to meet the learning needs of each boy. In 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, most of the traditional classroom lecture now happens as homework. Teachers record their lectures and work in the classroom is focused on mastery of concepts — a custom-designed curriculum in concert with learning management software has replaced the traditional textbook.

PDS Technology E-Book Download

As part of the application process, the Technology Department developed an e-book to document some of the achievements that led to the honor. We encourage you to download the ebook to read and share with others. It contains text, videos, and pictures of the school’s innovative teaching and learning.
