Community Helpers

Friday, 10 September 2010 - by Holly Yarbrough

Wow! We have been very busy this week! We continued focusing on the letter C by sharing the “Cowboy Carl “objects from home and reading Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? and Counting Dots. The boys enjoyed a cookie themed day estimating how many cookies they could stack to make an Oreo tower. We also reviewed sets by building towers and playing spin a number game.

The community helpers theme was a big hit! They loved dressing up!  We learned what a community is and even made our own commuinity on a map.  We learned about many community helpers such as teachers, construction workers, doctors, postmen, etc.  We even mailed ourself a letter so make sure to check the mail tomorrow!  The boys loved playing in our new community helpers center!   We want to send out a big thank you to our moms who volunteered to help with this!  On Friday, we had special visits from a Navy submarinist, a pediatrician, a radiologist,  and one of our very own workers at PDS.  They explained their job responsibilities and how they impact our community! Thanks to all of them for taking the time out of their busy day to talk to our boys!

Have a great weekend! We look forward to seeing you at the Jamboree tomorrow morning! It will be fun!

All About Me!

Friday, 03 September 2010 - by Holly Yarbrough

What another fun week!  The boys learned the letter C, continued identifying numbers 0 through 5, and focused on our all about me theme.  We introduced the C sound by making our camera letter card, looking at objects in our C buckets and brainstorming words that begin with the letter C. Other fun activities included a language arts activity on the laptops, a bean bag toss into numbered cups,  playing a great fine motor clothesline game, where the boys had to place certain C items on the clothesline. Also, this week, we have loved learning even more about your boys during our all about me theme!  We painted self-portraits after looking at several different famous artists’ portraits on the SmartBoard.  The boys paid very close attention to the detail in these portraits and did a great job painting their own!  We also read several books that encouraged each boy to realize how special they are as well as how special their family is!  We discussed many likes and differences in our families and emphasized that everyone in our classroom is a special gift from God!  Thank you for sharing your boys with us! We look forward to another great week!

Reminders:

JK Bible News

Tuesday, 31 August 2010 - by Darilyn Christenbury

Dear Parents,

What a joy and privilege it is to partner with you in your son’s spiritual growth. This year in JK Bible, we will meet two days in the six day rotation. We will study the people and stories of the Old Testament first semester and New Testament stories and people second semester.

At the end of every class, we pray for families, friends, needs and a country of the world. We are praying through an alphabetical list (this is our third year) and have already prayed for Jordan and Kazakhstan. If your family would like to pray for these countries as well, here is the list we will be using. You can go to http://operationworld.24-7prayer.com/ for more information on the countries.

Please know you are always welcome to stop by my room or email me with your questions, concerns and thoughts.

Blessings-

Darilyn Christenbury

Chicka Chicka 123

Friday, 27 August 2010 - by Holly Yarbrough

Our first full week of school has been a blast! We continued the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom theme by introducing the numbers 0-5 and reading fun books such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka 1-2-3. The boys were very excited about all the fun activities we did this week! We played a fun coconut game, where the boys had to identify numbers under different coconut shells and played two games where the boys had to roll a dice and identify the number rolled. The first game was building a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree and the second game was a jump race in the hallway! We also played a memory match game with pictures of each boy and did a thinking routine, “ I see, I think, I wonder,” with a real coconut.  They brainstormed ideas about what they thought is inside a coconut and had very creative questions and thoughts! They really enjoyed watching the coconut being cracked open! The boys ended the week with a special ice cream treat! Thank you for another great week! We love having your boys!

Our First Week in JK!

Friday, 20 August 2010 - by Holly Yarbrough

The past three days have been so much fun!! We enjoyed meeting all of your boys and loved seeing their smiling faces as they explored their new JK classrooms! We have learned about P.D. and Astro, discussed the classroom rules, and have started counting on the calendar. Also, the boys enjoyed water coloring their first names, making name necklaces, reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and making a class book with our self portraits. Today, the boys had a blast finding clues throughout the school, while making special visits to Mrs. Isom, Mr. Burns, and many other fun places! The tour ended with a special cookie for snack! Thanks for sharing your boys with us, and we look forward to an exciting year!
