Dear Friends,

The 2014–15 PDS Annual Fund wraps up soon. We are preparing the Annual Giving Report’s listing of donors that will be released at the end of our fiscal year, and we want to make sure that your name is on the list and listed correctly. This list reflects donors who pledged or contributed between August 1, 2014 and April 27, 2015.

Please fulfill your pledges in full by July 31, 2015 to be included in the final Giving Report.

Memphis, TN — January 22, 2015 — Presbyterian Day School (PDS) is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2014–2016. PDS was selected because of its approach to teaching and assessing for deep understanding and its commitment to integrating educational technology using Apple hardware, apps, and content-creation apps — all of which began in 2001 with the inception of a one-to-one laptop program.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

The selection of PDS as an Apple Distinguished School highlights the school’s success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment.

“PDS has used technology in innovative and creative ways for over a decade. We put a strong emphasis on creating classrooms where our teachers and students can seamlessly integrate computers, iPads, and applications into the daily lessons. Student engagement and academic achievement have increased as a result of this technology integration,” said Headmaster Steve Hancock

Students choose from a variety of Mac OS X and iOS applications on laptops and iPads — including Keynote, iMovie, Comic Life, and GarageBand — to express and demonstrate an understanding of lessons and concepts in the classroom. The school’s technology program also includes one-to-one professional development for teachers using in-classroom technology coaches.

“PDS began its one-to-one Apple laptop program in 2001 and has continued to use technology to teach and assess in ways that would be impossible without it,” said Cathy Kyle, the school’s Chief Information Officer. “Our teachers’ willingness to continue to learn and our internal technical support staff allows us to implement technology in such a way that it enhances the curriculum. Because of this, our classrooms are models of excellence.”

Founded in 1949, Presbyterian Day School is an independent school serving approximately 600 boys from 3-years-old through 6th grade. The school’s academic program centers on the development of critical and creative thinking skills as it trains boys to research, analyze, synthesize, and connect ideas and subjects, as well as to develop the important skills of collaboration and teaming. With a mission of striving to glorify God by developing boys in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man, the school takes a holistic approach to education, nurturing the heart, soul, mind and body of each boy.

Rhodes Heard is Headmaster Today

PDS 5th Grader, Rhodes Heard is serving as PDS' Headmaster today.

Headmaster for the Day is an auction item each year in the March Mania Auction.

Rhodes greeted students in carpool, shaking hands just like Mr. Burns. He also has had a busy morning conducting a fire drill and reading to a first grade class.

He declared a "dress down day" for tomorrow and has many more tasks and opportunities after a lunch meeting in his office.

Annual Fund

Annual Giving Fund: Making a DifferenceThe Annual Giving Fund is PDS’ first giving priority because of its immediate impact on our greatest asset: our boys. Dollars raised help PDS be the incredible place it is for 500 boys each and every day. For 70 years, PDS has been focused on academic excellence, Christian character development, and BOYS!

By giving to PDS’ Annual Giving Fund, you are sending a powerful message that you believe in the school’s mission, tradition of excellence, and incredibly bright future.

At PDS, and all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the entire cost of a boy’s education. Your gift helps bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost of educating a PDS boy.

Tuition dollars cover just under 90% of the true cost of educating a PDS boy. The Annual Giving Fund is the only source of immediately available and flexible funds that ensures that we meet this commitment to excellence each year.

Sources of Income

On mission.

Our mission is simple: we strive to glorify God as we develop boys in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man. When you walk on campus, you will see our mission lived out as our teachers and boys work together to become stronger in both character and knowledge. You will see first-hand the difference that a PDS education makes in the life of a boy.

Every donation, large or small, makes a difference in helping us educate and prepare young boys for success and a lifetime love of learning. If we want the best learning, we need the best teachers and resources — that’s costly — and not possible based solely on tuition. And that’s one place where the Annual Giving Fund makes a difference.

As we consider professional development requests for this year, requests for curricular resources, requests for music equipment, requests for athletic equipment, and the like, it is the Annual Giving Fund that makes the difference between yes and no.

You could say the Annual Giving Fund is the difference between good and better. It makes a huge difference to the boys of PDS. It makes them better.

Tuition dollars cover just under 90% of the true cost of educating a PDS boy.

Join Us: Make a Difference.

Today’s boys are tomorrow’s ground-breakers. One day, it will be up to them to make the world better. We’ll do our best to help them be prepared. That’s why it’s critical to build a foundation of problem-finding, mind-changing, idea-making, and good-doing that they can carry for their entire lives.

PDS is a special and unique school, and a PDS boy is far from ordinary. Your investment in the PDS Annual Giving Fund helps the school remain at the forefront of education.

Questions about the Annual Giving Fund:

Why does PDS need support beyond tuition?

At PDS, as at all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the entire cost of a PDS boy's education.

I can’t make a large gift – why should I bother?

Each gift impacts the lives of our students and faculty.

High levels of participation from parents, alumni, faculty and staff are a signal of strength and send an important message that together we are invested in preserving the extraordinary opportunities that matter most at PDS.

Your participation matters.
