Summer often provides an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the moments that shape a school year. As I look back on this past year at PDS, I am reminded that many of the most meaningful experiences in a boy’s education are found not only in milestone events, but also in the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

When boys reflect on a school year, they often remember the big moments first, such as Field Day, Maker Faire, VR Retreats, athletic competitions, Crusader Café, and other cherished traditions. These experiences matter deeply and become lasting memories, woven into the stories boys carry with them for years to come. However, it is often the quieter experiences that have the greatest influence on who they become. Growth happens in the daily rhythms of school life: learning to focus when something is difficult, listening attentively in class, persevering through challenges, practicing responsibility, showing kindness to classmates, and working alongside others toward a common goal. These seemingly ordinary moments steadily shape character, habits, and identity.

Over time, they become part of the foundation that prepares boys not only for academic success, but also for lives marked by purpose. While the signature events of a school year may stand out in memory, it is often the everyday moments in between that leave the deepest and most lasting mark.

The stories featured in this issue reflect many of these formative experiences. Within these pages, you will find examples of the ways boys grow, learn, and discover who they are becoming.

One of the most exciting developments featured in this issue is the continued momentum of the Campaign for Boyhood. As we look ahead to the opening of a new dining hall in late fall, there is a growing sense of anticipation across our community. This project represents far more than an addition to our campus; it reflects our commitment to creating environments where boys thrive.

Knowing that much of a boy’s formation occurs in the everyday rhythms of school life, the settings that support those experiences matter deeply. At PDS, we believe the environment itself functions as a third teacher, shaping experiences, relationships, and habits. A dining hall is more than a place to eat; it is where conversations unfold, friendships deepen, courtesy and gratitude are practiced, and community is strengthened day after day. In these ordinary interactions, boys learn what it means to contribute and care for one another. We look forward to the many shared moments that will unfold in this gathering place, where boys are known, valued, and encouraged to grow.

This issue also highlights the growing work of The Center for Educational Growth as our faculty continue exploring how boys learn best. In particular, you will find thoughtful reflections on raising boys in a digital age, the importance of boredom and unstructured play, and practical ways families can support learning and healthy development during the summer months. These articles reflect our ongoing commitment to helping parents navigate both the opportunities and challenges facing boys today.

Additionally, you will find stories that capture the joy and spirit of life at PDS. Whether celebrating the return of Field Day for the Class of 2020, highlighting the creativity of Maker Faire, or showcasing the service-minded work of Leadership 901, these stories illustrate the character, curiosity, faith, and leadership we seek to cultivate in every boy. We hope you enjoy this edition of PDS Spirit and wish your family an adventurous, restorative, and meaningful summer.
