We have been working on vowel sounds this week through our daily handwriting, blending board, letter tiles, and weekly dictation/blending sheet.  Boys also listened to their teacher call out a word and held up their vowel stick for the vowel they heard in the word.  We read the book Tim the Hog, practiced reading with expression, and comprehending what we read.  We created Bingo sheets with short i words to practice our blending/reading, and had lots of fun!  We continued decomposing numbers through five to better understand the meaning of addition.  We ended our week with making "Decomposing Turkeys".  We wrote our numbers through 40, and had fun practicing our symmetry skills with our tables.  We put a piece of tape down the middle of our tables, and built a symmetrical creation on both sides with our pattern blocks.  We learned this week that the Pilgrims were on the Mayflower for 64 days!  The Native Americans used symbols for their writing and would often used animals skins as their "paper".  The boys had a blast writing on their own created "buckskin" after we read the book The Indian and the Paintbrush.  We can't wait to find out more about the story of Thanksgiving.

     What a fun filled week we have had in SK!!  We celebrated the letter H with hats, crazy hair, Halloween, and hotdogs with Headmaster Hancock!!


     We worked on our handwriting with extra emphasis on our blending (gl, cl, etc.) and incorporated blending words with use of a capital letter. We practiced our red words by playing some fun games called "Knock Out", Sparkle- Sparkle-Zap, Boom, and learned a few new songs!  We wrote in our journals about Halloween, created a picture with crazy hair, practiced our reading skills on Reading Eggs, sorted our hats to discuss similarities and differences, read in small group Bug Has A Hut , and are enjoying the chapter book The Candy Corn Contest that our teacher is reading aloud.


     We explored math this week with our two class pumpkins.  We estimated the height, diameter, and how many seeds our pumpkins would contain.  Then we talked about what measuring tool we should use to find the exact measurements of our pumpkins and compared our estimates or our actual measurements.  We designed, carved our big pumpkin, and then roasted our pumpkin seeds.  Boys are enjoying estimating a jar of goodies each week.  At the end of the week, we count the exact amount to practice counting by 2's and 10's.  The boy that estimates the closest to the exact amount, gets the goodies in the jar!!  We are also enjoying learning about bones , and are excited about our upcoming activities on Thanksgiving!

What a Great week we had in SK studying the letter G. We worked hard this week
blending and finger taping letter “g” words. We can’t wait to show you how to finger
tap sound out at home. Our poetry journal this week taught us about a grasshopper,
and we learned how to express ourselves with exclamation points.

We used our red words this week to make a sentence in our journals and played
several new games. Our favorite game this week was 3 Billy Goats Gruff red word
bridge. That sneaky Gruff did not want us to cross the bridge. During small groups,
we went on a color word hunt around the room and drew pictures to match our
color words. Please continue to work on red words nightly with your son. We will
be adding number words 0-10 in the month of October.

This week, we learned how to code words. We learned to always search for the
vowel first and then look to see if there is one consonant after the vowel. If the
word has 1 vowel and a consonant immediately after, we can give the vowel a breve.
The breve tells us the vowel will say its sound. Ask your son to show you how to use
a breve at home. We will continue coding our 3 letter words over the next few

Teen numbers can be tricky, but we learned a great song to help us remember
“numbers in the teens start with a one.” We have loved dancing and singing this
week. We have been counting nickels and pennies up to 10 and used our knowledge
to do small group coin counting and play money bingo. We are working hard on
number writing and letter writing. Please practice at home using your blue
handwriting folder.

We have enjoyed studying our 5 senses. Using our listening skills only we played a
sound matching game. It was difficult not being able to talk with our friends to find
the match. We will be exploring our sense of smell next week.
We will be starting a new character trait next week. We will be discussing what it
means to be a Humble Hero.

We are looking forward to letter M next week. We are excited to challenge
ourselves with more coin counting, positional words and continue our study of ten
