“I urge low ranking and yield my time to the chair.” The PDS boys could be heard saying this over and over again at the YMCA Middle School Model United Nations Conference on Friday, December 1, 2017. This one-day event held in the City Hall Chambers was a hands-on experience for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students involving international politics and issues promoting world peace. Being given the opportunity to develop leadership and speaking skills while debating under the rules of parliamentary procedure was only a part of the process. The YMCA Youth in Government strives to instill caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in this unique educational program.
Nineteen 6th grade PDS boys represented delegates from six countries, which included Australia, Guinea, Kenya, Kiribati, Nigeria, and Yemen. Those participating were Wilson Bridgforth, Lee Couloubaritsis, William Eubank, Harrison Goetze, Hayes Graham, Owen Grow, Peter Klemis, William Levy, Henry Lindeman, Gates Luton, Sai Madasu, John McAllister, Wyatt McAllister, Ishan Omer, Parth Patel, Grayson Pollan, Andrew Tancredi, Elton Wolff, and Seth Yarbrough. They learned to respectfully agree to disagree in a diverse world. Each team was challenged by the research process and writing a formal resolution to present in Committee or before the General Assembly.
Outstanding Resolution Award:
- Wilson Bridgforth
- Harrison Goetze
- Ihsan Omer
All of these 6th grade boys were more than capable of holding their own in a debate with older students. “Our PDS boys were articulate, knowledgeable, and confident throughout the all-day conference,” said Mrs. Nina Haley, Model UN Coach. Congratulations are in order to all of these boys for maintaining the high standard that previous PDS teams have set!
