hamptonsidesfinal2-lowresPDS is pleased to announce that Wade Hampton Sides ’74 has been named the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus, the highest award given to any of our 3,500+ alumni.

Hampton Sides is the author of the acclaimed best-selling narrative histories Ghost Soldiers, Blood and Thunder, and most recently Hellhound On His Trail .   He is editor-at-large for Outside magazine and has also written for National Geographic, The New Yorker, Newsweek, The New York Times, National Public Radio, and The Washington Post. His magazine work, collected in numerous published anthologies, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing.  Hampton currently lives in Santa Fe with his wife Anne and their three boys.

Save the date for Friday, April 1 when PDS will honor this distinguished alumnus at the alumni luncheon.  Invitation to follow in the mail.

Approximately 400 alumni and school friends gathered for the annual alumni luncheon on Wednesday to reconnect with classmates and former teachers, recall their days as boys at PDS, and celebrate Fred Smith ‘56, Founder, Chairman and CEO of FedEx, as he was presented the school’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.

“What a happy and exciting day in the life of PDS,” says Headmaster Lee Burns. “To see so many alumni back on campus thrilled us, and we were so delighted in particular to honor Mr. Smith for his remarkable accomplishments and inspirational man he is.”

Mr. Smith spent part of the morning meeting boys and teachers as he visited classrooms and toured the school. “Our boys were so excited to see and meet him, and our 6th graders in the luncheon had the opportunity to hear him talk about challenges and opportunities facing our country in today’s global community,” says Burns.
