We started our week off right with a visit from Zero the Hero! He zooms in on every tenth day of school bearing a special treat. The boys must ask yes or no questions to uncover and receive the treat! Hint: it is always shaped like a zero! He left us yummy fudge stripe cookies!

We introduced our first letter this week. Ff!! We listed words that begin with the letter F, made a football letter card played a Farmer Frank game. We will spend two weeks on letter F.

We are also working hard on our first names this week! We have been practicing writing our first names through the Handwriting Without Tears “Wet, Dry, Try” method in which the student uses a wet sponge to trace his name on a chalkboard, follow the sponge with a dry tissue, and then tries for himself with chalk! During this exercise, the Handwriting Without Tears letter formation language is incorporated. You can practice at home too! Look out for instructions coming home soon in your son’s folder.

We have begun our first monthly Discovery unit on “All about Me” this week! We have emphasized that God made us all perfect in his image and to celebrate the qualities which make us unique! We created a mixed-media self-portrait using paint and oil -pastels. They will be hanging in our room all year!

We wish everyone a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!

We have had a fantastic first full week in JK! This week, we focused on recognizing our first names in print and learning the names of our classmates. We loved playing memory match with our friends’ faces! For our own names, we used paint dabbers to “dab” large letters in our names. We created our very own coconut tree that correlated with the book Chicka Chicka, Boom Boom and letter stamped our names on the tree. We read the book A, My Name is Alice by Jane Bayer which sparked our thinking about things that start with the same beginning letter as our first names! We created collage portraits of ourselves to go with our ideas, and they are brightening up the walls of our classroom! We counted the letters in our names after reading Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and graphed the names of all of our friends in our class!

We read the book, Chicka Chicka 123, and worked on recognizing the numbers 0-5. We reinforced our recognition of numbers with a beanbag tossing game and a number search. We had a fun activity of who could build the tallest tower using unifix cubes rolling a foam dice.

With all of our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom study, we needed to investigate a real coconut!  We did a “See, Think, Wonder” thinking routine on a real coconut and described how it felt. We then got to crack it open! We also got to taste shredded coconut that Astro left for us!

We continued the study of our rules from last week.   We talked about what makes a “weak choice” and a “strong choice,” and sorted different actions that might arise in the classroom! We ended the week with a bang and popsicles from Mrs. Todd!
