Quite the Week in JK!

We had quite the week in JK! We introduced the letter Qq. We learned that Qq is followed by the letter Uu and came up with a great list of Qq words. We made our quilt letter cards and had a special visit from Mrs. Todd. She showed us a quilt she is working on and explained the process of making a quilt! We used Q-tips in sand to practice handwriting and played a fun game called Quiz Show!

We wrapped up our unit on teen numbers with some fun games. We played teen BINGO and Teen Bang- the boys loved it! We practiced writing the teen numbers as well.

Rhyming has been our focus this week, and Dr. Seuss has been a big help! We began the week by watching a Brainpop, Jr. on rhyming. We practiced making our own rhyming words and have read Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. We have built rhyming puzzles in which we connected words that rhyme and played a spinner game. We sorted and identified our own rhyming words on the white board and look forward to working more on rhyming next week!

Looking Ahead and Reminders:

We had an Outrageous week in JK learning about the letter Oo. We made an olive letter card, tasted green and black olives and graphed our favorite!

We have been rounding out our Red, White, and Blue unit by making connections between George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Donald Trump. We watched a Brainpop, Jr. on Washington and Lincoln and read George Washington’s Teeth by Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora. We made our own tri-corner hats just like our first president! We read Our Abe Lincoln by Jim Ayles and learned about what an honest man Lincoln was and how he worked to abolish slavery. After watching a Brainpop, Jr. about the jobs of the president, we talked about how we elect our president by voting. We were thrilled to attend the 2nd graders Yipes Stripes presidential parade on Friday!

During February, the JK boys continue learning about winter and the clothing that’s worn during the winter.  Our favorite book we use to practice our vocabulary is “Froggy se Viste” (“Froggy gets Dressed”).  After I finish reading the book, we play a game to review the sequence of the story.  Then the boys color Froggy and the individual articles of his clothing, and then cut them out and paste his clothes on him.  We also play “El Juego de Memoria” (“The Memory Game”) to reinforce the words learned in the unit.  Finally, we sing songs about winter and how to dress for the cold.  Our concurrent unit is about “Los Lugares de Me Comunidad” (“The Places in My Community”).

Hasta pronto,

Señora Watson

This week we introduced the letter Cc. We made our car letter card, built creatures, played with the car port and graphed candy hearts.

This week and next, we will be working on the numbers 11-20. We subitized by practicing identifying how many items were in ten frames without counting! We played “erase-a-number” in which we erased certain numbers based on clues the teacher gave us! We also practiced writing the teen numbers.

We also loved celebrating Valentine’s Day with our second grade buddies when they came down to help us read our valentines! We read Today is Valentine’s Day by P. K. Hallinan and enjoyed a special cookie treat from the teachers!

We also had a visitor from the Carpenters’ Art Garden came to speak to us. She was very appreciative of all the art supplies the boys brought in.

Next week, we look forward to studying the letter Oo, continuing teenage numbers through 20, and focusing on US presidents!

Z week in JK!

This week we zipped into our study of the letter Z. We created zebras on our letter card and
created a nice list of Z words. We had a zoo center and in our journal we wrote about our
favorite zoo animal. We also used paint in Ziplock bags to practice our handwriting.
We have continued our study of coins this week playing which coin is missing, coin sort and
graphing, and coin musical chairs. Please continue to review coins at home.
We have been focusing on symbols that represent the United States of America this week in
JK, especially about the American flag, the bald eagle and the Statue of Liberty. After reading
F is for Flag by Wendy Cheyette Lewison, we created our own American flags. Ask your son
about why our flag has fifty stars! We learned about how our founding fathers chose the
bald eagle to be the national bird and about what the bald eagle stands for. We learned
about the Statue of Liberty and completed a tell-and-draw in which we created our own
Statues of Liberty.
Thank you to everyone for making our Valentine’s so special by completing the Hearts for
Art chore chart with your sons and earning money to buy supplies for the Carpenter Art
Garden. We look forward to them coming next week to show us pictures of the kids at the
Art Garden and explain to us the work that they do there. This is a perfect way for us to
share God’s love and our own gifts with others!
Please send in your Hearts for Art Supplies and Valentines by Monday, February 10 th if you
have not already done so. Thanks!
As we look ahead to next week, we look forward to studying the letter Cc, identifying the
teen numbers, and focusing on Valentine’s Day.

100th Day of JK!!

We began this week with the 100th Day of school! The boys looked adorable dressed as 100-year-olds, and we had a blast with our “100 Day” activities. From making necklaces with 100 Fruit Loops to ordering numbers 1-100 to searching for 100 Hershey’s kisses hidden around the room, we had one hundred times the fun! Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped make our day such a blast!

We have continued our study of coins this week, playing “Coin Bang!, coin hop, and coin sort. We also loved studying coins under a magnifying glass and investigating all of the features that make them different.

We are ready for spring and have discussed Puxatawney Phil this week, making our own predictions regarding whether or not he will see his shadow this weekend! We loved laughing along to Go to Sleep, Groundhog by Judy Cox. We had so much fun with our STEAM shadow activities using blocks, cubes, and flashlights.

Yay for JK!

We’ve had great fun yelling about the letter Yy! We began our study by making yo yo’s on our lettercard, making a list of words that start with the letter Yy, and handwriting Yy using yellow highlighters! We enjoyed yogurt as a special snack and played with yo yo’s! As always, we look forward to seeing what Maggie decides to eat and generating our own words beginning with Yy!

Coins will serve as our math unit for the next couple of weeks, and we have introduced the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, and Quarters books by Mary Hill have taught us all about how to recognize the different coins we see. We are recording what we learn about each coin and making connections! We made our own paper versions of the coins to bring home to help us review.

We are looking forward to lots of fun next week as we celebrate our 100th day of school on Tuesday. Thank you to the parents that have volunteered to help us with our activities!
