Dear Class of 2020 Parents and Students,

Finally! Here are the dates and information for our events.

Rehearsal and Rib Day at PDS Football Field

Friday, June 26, 10:00am

To gain entry to Commencement rehearsal, each student, faculty member, and staff member will have their temperature taken and be asked if they have:

  1. experienced an elevated temperature, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss of taste or smell;
  2. have been diagnosed with COVID-19; or (3) been in close contact with anyone confirmed to have COVID-19 within the past 14 days. If they have, they will be denied admission unless they can provide proof that they recently tested negative for COVID-19 (via a test for active infection; we cannot accept antibody test results).
  3. If they have a fever or cough or if they feel sick, they should not come to rehearsal.

Email mfruitt@pdsmemphis.org if your son or someone in your household has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks, and/or if he will be absent for rehearsal.

PDS upgraded the Renaissance program the last week of May, and AR is now open for students to take tests from home.

The update has given us a new URL (web address) and looks a bit different. You may still use the link in your son's summer work folder to access AR, but it will redirect you to our new AR website.

All AR links found on the PDS website take you directly to the new Renaissance URL. The video below shows how to find the AR links on the PDS website, find the total points your son has earned this summer, and see results on individual tests.

While it seems far away right now, it is fun to consider the new opportunities that are available to the boys in 5th grade. One of these exciting offerings is the chance to be a part of the Band here at PDS.  We are thrilled that Mr. Terry Himebook will be teaching Band at PDS next year.

The program is designed to give our boys the opportunity to experience making music and to begin a lifelong love of instrumental music. Much has been written about the connection between music and brain development, success in school, and success in life. Learning to play an instrument will be a wonderful extension of what they have already learned in their music classes here at school.
Students in the Band program meet two times each week in the following settings:

*Small Group Lessons: Students are placed in a small group with 3 - 5 classmates that play the same instrument. Students will learn basic techniques of the instrument, how to read music, and how to create a beautiful sound. These lessons take place during the school day on a rotating basis.

*Large Group/Full Band Rehearsals: THURSDAYS from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.  Boys are able to participate in band and athletics - including the Crusader Teams. The large group meeting is designed to help the boys learn to follow a conductor, play in a large group, and to learn some exciting music.

Much more information and the opportunity to try out some instruments will come at the beginning of next school year. A Parent Meeting and Registration will take place at that time.

**If your son may be interested in learning an instrument, we simply encourage you to keep Thursdays after school until 4 PM open on his activity calendar for next year.

In the meantime, please contact me if you have questions.

Mr. Himebook is already looking forward to meeting a new group of PDS musicians!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Stephanie Hancock
