Band - Crusaders

Students in the Band program will meet two times each week in the following settings:

  • Small Group Instruction: Students will be placed in a small group with no more than four students. Students will learn basic techniques of the instrument, how to read music, and how to create a beautiful sound. These lessons will take place during the school day.
  • Large Group Instruction:
    • Our Beginning Band will meet between 3:15 and 4:00 pm. on Thursdays.
    • The Crusader Band (6th grade) will meet on Thursday mornings, 7:45-8:40 am.
  • There will be no conflicts for any boys who participate in athletics - including our Crusader teams. The large group meeting is designed to help the boys learn to follow a conductor, play in a large group, and to learn some exciting music.

Thank you!

Dear Crusader Band Parents,

I just want to take a moment to thank you for the opportunity to teach music to your sons! We worked hard this year and the boys truly rose to the occasion in their performances. I am especially proud of them because in this first year of Crusader Band, they truly helped to make it successful. Thank you to them and to you!

I know that they boys are headed in different directions next year, but I do hope that many of them will continue to play their instruments. Being involved in a music ensemble can be a wonderful part of a student's school day--something in contrast to the other subjects being studied. Please seriously consider this for your son.

Thank you for your support over these past two years--it has been a privilege to work with all of you!

Dear Band Parents,

What a wonderful year we have had in Band! I hope you are very proud of your son and all that he has accomplished. This particular group of 5th graders has worked so well together and made excellent progress. I was so pleased! This also makes me really look forward to next year.

The Crusader Band (6th grade band) rehearses on Thursday mornings during the first period of the school day, 7:45 - 8:40 AM. This is really nice because it is during the school day, but they are not missing another class to have the full rehearsal. (Students that are not in band have a study hall/quiet reading during that time.) Crusader Band members also have one small group lesson per week on a rotating basis. For 6th graders, I try to offer more flex times so that the boys can stay on top of the academic responsibilities that they have.

On our End-of-Year Band Survey, an overwhelming majority of the boys marked that they plan to continue as a member of the Crusader Band. I sure hope so, as I see so much potential in this group as a whole!

Please confirm that your son will be in Crusader Band by emailing me directly at stephaniehancock@pdsmemphis.org

Please confirm your registration as soon as possible, but no later that May 22, so that we may plan for next year.

Thank you for all of your support this year. It has been a joy to teach your sons!

Special Opportunity/Event

Thursday, 23 March 2017

Hi all,

My rep from Amro Music informed me of some really great special guests they have coming in next week to do special Masterclasses and presentations. All of these guys have played professionally with some big names and I hear they do a great presentation.

Trumpet and Saxophone player next Tuesday March 28th at 6PM at Amro Music on Poplar.

Contemporary Flute Player next Thursday March 30th at 6PM at Amro.

Even if you don’t play those instruments, woodwind players would enjoy the sax or flute player. Any brass player will gain from hearing the trumpet guest.

The events take place upstairs in the concert hall.

Attached is the poster highlighting the details.

Check it out!
