Spelling Week of August 26

This week in spelling we concentrating on Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) words with a special focus on the short vowels e and i.

*These two sounds are very similar and can be a bit tricky.  Really stress that your mouth is wider when you say the short e sound.

Most weeks we will not give you an exact list of spelling words to study because we want the boys to learn the focus skill for that week.  

Here are some example words that you can practice this week.  

Example Words:  pet, leg, ten, yes, men, vet, set, pit, dim, jig, his, big, rip, kid, lip

Red Words (These are sight words that will be on the test.):  said, went, to   Review: of, was

Class News Week of August 19

Parents, 

I have enjoyed getting to know your boys this past week and I am looking forward to meeting with you on Parent Night (Aug 29). Each week I will update the website, and the update will be sent to you each Monday by email. I will include what we are covering in class, spelling notes, important dates, and reminders. Please be sure to read the update each week for important information. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me. I am looking forward to a great year in first grade!

Math:  number sense, tallies, </>, more/less

English:  What is a sentence?/Word Order

Social Studies:  What makes a city a city? 

Things to Remember:

*Remember to bring in an extra set of clothes and math money

*Please return all forms from the First Grade Packet.

Spelling: r-controlled vowels (ar)

Reading:  What are planets?  How can simple machines help you design a tool to fix a problem when on a different planet?  Skills- real/fantasy, drawing conclusions, cause/effect, setting, claim/support, abc order, sequencing, main idea/details, classify/catagorize

Math:   Adding to 100 without regrouping; Function Machines; Rocket Quiz Subtraction (-0,1)/Thursday

English:  When do you drop the y and add -ies, -ied, or -ier?  Remember to just add s, d, or r when the y has a vowel in front of it.  Ex:  keys    

Science:   Of what are planets made? What is a simple machine? How do I use simple machines in my daily life? How can simple machines help you design a tool to fix a problem when on a different planet?

Things to Remember:

*2/14/19  Valentine's Day Party @ 1:45 p.m.  (All parents are welcome.  Remember to bring your Valentine's Box)

Spelling Week of February 4

This week we are investigating r-controlled vowels with an emphasis on 'ar'.  Remember the 'r' is bossy and doesn't give the 'a' a chance to say anything.

Focus: ar

Example Words:  car, shark, partner, park, march, marsh, yarn, dart, target, hard, start, market, harp, smart, artist

Red Words:   isn't, he's, often, have, only **These words will be on the test.

This week we will explore diphthongs.  Two vowels together sometimes form brand-new sounds that are neither long nor short.  They are called diphthongs.  Once again, there is not a rule that helps when deciphering which spelling to use.  Therefore, we are giving you the words this week.  Study!  Study!

Focus: ou, ow

Words:  now, cow, power, clown, howl, our, mouth, proud, snout, house, ouch

Red Words:  should, would, could, does, want

English:  What are pronouns?  When is a good time to use pronouns in our writing?

Science: What are rocks? How are different rocks formed? Who are astronauts? What do astronauts do?  How do you become an astronaut?
